MSDN-AA Eligibility Information

The MSDN-AA program, an offshoot of the Microsoft Developer Network subscription program, has a somewhat complex eligibility requirement.  These requirements come from Microsoft and are not under Yale's control.

Important Note: If you are a listed member of one of the departments participating in the Campus Agreement program, you are very likely covered for most Microsoft software by a separate license.  Please contact your departmental IT staff for information on how to get what you need.

Here are some guidelines to help you determine if you are eligible.  If you have any questions about your own eligibility, please e-mail msdn-aa@yale.edu .

For more information on usage guidelines, see the official MSDN-AA site .

Students:
  • Students are the largest beneficiary of the MSDN-AA Program.

  • Example : Any Yale student who is registered for at least one credit hour.

Faculty Members:
  • Faculty members may utilize MSDN-AA software for the purpose of instruction and/or not-for-profit research.

  • Facilities (labs or classrooms) dedicated to these activities may use the software on all qualifying systems.

  • Example : A faculty member who is engaged in not-for-profit research may use MSDN-AA software for all Yale systems that are dedicated to that activity (such as a group of computers in a lab)

  • Example : A faculty member who wishes to provide a departmental file server for general use by everyone in their department is NOT eligible.

  • Example:  A Yale faculty member developing curriculum for a course to be taught using one of the products in the MSDN-AA program (such as Visual Studio or SQL server) IS eligible.
Staff:
  • Staff members are eligible only in a very narrow case: Where they are directly involved in creating instructional content or in supporting MSDN-AA provided systems.

  • Example :  A staff member who is creating content (such as sample code) to be used in class is eligible.

  • Example : A staff member who directly administers MSDN-AA software used exclusively by an other eligible user (such as a research lab) is eligible.

  • Example : A staff member who wants to test the latest version of an application or server in order to determine suitability for deployment is NOT eligible.
