How to Request an
Organizational Unit (OU) at Yale
Organizational Units (OUs) are subdivisions within an Active Directory domain that correspond to domains in the NT environment. As such they represent groups of machines that have a common IT authority such as a support group or person. For more information on what OU's are and how they're used, see this page.
To request an OU, please follow these steps:
- Review the administrative structure of the Active Directory.
This is documented on the "Administrative Authority Policies for Active Directory at Yale" web page. The AD has a true administrative hierarchy and it is important that all administrators be clear on what that hierarchy is.
- Check if there is an appropriate OU
already in existence.
If one already exists then contact the administrators of the OU to request a sub-OU for your group if it is appropriate. For example, a research group in a department should have an OU created within the department's OU. OU Administrators have the authority to create sub-OU's on their own. If you're not sure if there is an appropriate OU for your area, please send email.
- Designate a primary and alternate contact for the new OU.
This contact information will be kept on file so that the proper person(s) can be contacted in case of questions/problems with the OU.
- Log into this web page and complete the form with the necessary information.
A valid NetID is required to log in.
You will need to provide the
following information:
Once this information is submitted, the designated people will be contacted by ITS to confirm creation of the new OU. The names and other contact information supplied will be kept on file.
